What to do during a power outage

Tags: , ,

Often during the winter months there may be a slight hiccup in the power system in Kingston as there are in most other major cities. If a transformer goes out, so do your lights. Its best to be prepared even though most power outages are momentary.

Power outages in Kingston are often caused by freezing rain, snow storms, high winds, cold snaps and or sleet storms which damage electrical equipment.

During a power outage in Kingston, you may be without heating, lighting or even running water. If you have a phone via the cable company you may also be without a phone as well as cable and of course internet service.

Below we provide simple tips to reduce the impact of a Kingston power outage. By planning ahead it certainly takes the stress out of the situation

  1. Make a family emergency plan, so that everyone knows what to do, and where to go in case of an emergency.
  2. Make an emergency kit, so that you and your family can be self-sufficient during a power outage. A good emergency kit should include the following:
    • At least two litres of water per person per day.
    • Keep canned food on hand. Be sure to also have some energy bars and dried foods (plus a can opener)
    • Extra Batteries (C, D and AA)
    • Wind-up or battery-powered flashlight
    • Wind-up or battery-powered weather radio
    • First Aid Kit
    • Candles
    • To keep your family entertained, board games are a fun way to pass the time.
    • Extra keys to your car and home
    • Cash in smaller bills, such as $5 bills and change for payphones.
    • Additional cell phone battery and car charger
  3. Unplug items in your home which may be susceptible to shock. When the power returns there may be a slight jolt to some electronic items if they remain in the on position.
  4. Don’t open your refrigerator unless you absolutely have to. If it is winter time, some food items can even be placed in your garage, on your deck or even in your car to be kept cold.
